Blood tests are one of the most common diagnostic tools used by GPs to investigate symptoms, monitor long-term conditions, and check general health. Understanding how to request a blood test and how to view your results can save you significant time.
To get an NHS blood test, a clinician must first authorise it. You can request this via an online GP consultation. Once authorised, you can usually attend a walk-in clinic or book an appointment with a phlebotomist at a local GP hub. You can view your results securely on the NHS App.
You cannot simply demand a blood test; there must be a clinical reason for it. To get one authorised:
In London, blood tests are often conducted at dedicated phlebotomy clinics or GP hubs rather than at your own surgery. For example, patients at GP Pathfinder Clinics can attend walk-in blood test sessions at:
Always arrive at least 10 minutes before the stated closing time and remember to bring your printed blood test form.
Some blood tests (like certain cholesterol or blood sugar tests) require you to fast (eat nothing and drink only water) for 8 to 12 hours beforehand. Your GP will tell you if you need to fast when they authorise the test.
Most routine blood test results are returned to the GP within 3 to 5 working days. Some specialised tests can take longer.
The easiest way to view your results is via the NHS App. The doctor will add a comment to the results (e.g., “Normal, no action required” or “Please book a telephone appointment to discuss”). If the results show something urgent, the practice will contact you directly by phone.
At GP Pathfinder Clinics, we make the diagnostic process as smooth as possible. We authorise blood tests quickly via our online triage system, and our patients benefit from excellent access to local walk-in phlebotomy hubs, including weekend availability. We encourage all patients to use the NHS App to track their results without waiting on hold.
