NHS GP for Temporary Residents and Visitors to London
If you are visiting London for work, study, or leisure and you become ill, you do not necessarily need to go to an Accident & Emergency (A&E) department. You can receive free NHS primary care by registering as a temporary resident with a local GP surgery.
The Short Answer
If you are staying in London for more than 24 hours but less than three months, you can ask a GP surgery to register you as a temporary resident. This allows you to see a doctor, get prescriptions, and receive medical advice without being removed from your permanent GP’s list back home.
How Temporary Registration Works
Temporary registration is designed to ensure you can access care when away from home. Here is how it works:
- Eligibility: You must be staying in the area for between 24 hours and three months. (If you are staying longer than three months, you should register permanently).
- The Process: You will need to fill out a Temporary Services Form (GMS3) at the practice.
- Your Records: The temporary GP will pass details of any treatment you receive to your permanent GP so your medical records remain up to date.
What If I Need Urgent Care?
If you need medical attention immediately and cannot wait to register as a temporary resident, you can receive emergency treatment from any GP surgery for up to 14 days. If the practice is full, they must still offer emergency care or direct you to a local Urgent Treatment Centre.
You can also call NHS 111 at any time for advice and direction to the nearest appropriate service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to pay for temporary GP services?
No. Seeing an NHS GP is free for anyone in England, regardless of whether you are a permanent or temporary resident. However, standard NHS prescription charges may apply.
I am visiting from overseas. Can I see a GP?
Yes. Anyone in England can see a GP for free, regardless of nationality or immigration status. You do not need proof of address or ID. However, if you require hospital treatment (other than A&E), you may be charged depending on your visa status. Read more in our guide for new arrivals and immigrants.
Can a GP refuse to register me temporarily?
A practice can refuse to register you as a temporary resident if they do not have the capacity to take on new patients. However, they cannot refuse you emergency treatment if you need it.
